the boys--historia

Un poco de historia...
Pertenecientes a la primera generación punk británica, Casino Steel y Matt Dangerfield, miembros fundadores de The Boys, habían tocado en London ss junto a integrantes de Clash, Damned y Generation X. Pioneros de la escena,entre 1977 y 1981 The Boys editaron cuatro magníficos álbumes en los que un punk energético fue mutando hacia una armónica new wave, manteniendo siempre su devoción por las melodías sin olvidarse del rock’n’roll.

Casino Steel (teclados/coros) era un miembro esencial de los glamorosos Hollywood Brats. Steel conoció en Londres a Matt Dangerfield (guitarra/voz) quien había convertido el sótano de su casa, en el barrio de Maida Vale, en un estudio de Grabación casero, muy importante en el desarrollo del punk en Inglaterra: allí hicieron sus primeras grabaciones nombres como The Damned, The Clash, Generation X y Sex Pistols.
Steel y Dangerfield se unieron al pionero grupo punk London SS junto a Mick Jones (The Clash), Brian James (The Damned) y Tony James (Generation X/ Sigue Sigue Sputnik). Se alejaron de la banda para formar The Boys, cuya formación se completó con Duncan Reid (bajo/coros), Jack Black (bateria) y ¨Honest¨ Jhon Plain (guitarra/coros).

Para Enero de 1977 se convirtieron en el primer grupo punk británico en obtener contrato para editar un LP, al firmar con Nems (sello originalmente creado por Brian Epstein, manager de The Beatles). Su primer simple ¨I Don´t Care¨ fue seguido de un tour como soporte del ex Velvet Underground John Cale. El segundo simple ¨First Time¨ fue aclamado por la prensa como uno de los mejores de la época y entro directo al top 40 ingles junto con su álbum debut auto-titulado. Londres ardía de punk rock y en sus shows hacían apariciones sorpresa personajes como Johnny Thunders o Marianne Faithfull. Sin dudas su mejor simple fue el siguiente ¨Brickfield Nights¨ de Marzo de 1978. Un brillante adelanto de un aun mas aun brillante LP ¨Alternative Chartbusters¨. Grabaron sendas apariciones para el legendario show radial de John Peel en la BBC y firmaron para Safari para editar su tercer álbum ¨To Hell With The Boys¨.

Un tour nacional por todo el Reino Unido como soporte de Ramones le dio un gran empujón a su ya establecida y reconocida fama de increíble banda en vivo. En ese tour no solo convencieron a los propios Joey y Johnny Ramone de tocar su por entonces hit ¨Baby I Love You¨ sino que hasta ¡les enseñaron como tocarlo!. Durante la gira Lanzaron un nuevo single ¨Terminal Love¨ el 7 de Febrero de 1980. ¨You Better Move On¨ (una versión de Arthur Alexandre que habían versionado los Rolling Stones) fue el ultimo single con Steel aun en la banda, quien se volvió a su Noruega natal y tuvo gran éxito junto a Gary Holton. Casino habia anteriormente rechazado una invitación de su amigo Johnny Ramone para unirse a Ramones como tecladista quienes ya tenían preparado el bautismo de quien no quiso finalmente ser ¡Casino Ramone!.
The Boys continuaron como cuarteto y sacaron su penúltimo simple ¨weekend¨, consagrado como ¨Disco del mes¨ en Radio 1, la señal nacional británica. En Enero de 1981 salio su ultimo sencillo ¨Let it rain¨ y LP ¨Boys Only¨. Para Fines de ese año The Boys ya es historia.

Cada Navidad The Boys ¨arreglaban¨ su nombre canjeando la ¨B¨ y la ¨Y¨ para convertirse en sus alter-egos The Yobs y bajo este nombre lanzaron dos imperdibles discos de clasicos villancicos con letras punks un tanto subidas de tono
